Translation Of Style In Fiction

The translatability of literary style and how to reproduce the original style have been the focus of many translators’debate. Most of the scholars are in favor of this point of view that style is tangible and translatable. This thesis selects Lin Yijin’s translation version of A Farewell to Arms as the research objective. With Antconc software analysis and case analysis, this thesis attempts to analyze the style of A Farewell to Arms and the original style reproduction of A Farewell to Arms by applying Liu Miqing’s stylistic markers theory, and then makes a proper evaluation on Lin Yijin’s version. This analysis will have some theoretical and realistic significance for scholars to understand the fiction A Farewell to Arms and evaluate Lin Yijin’s translation version. At the same time, this thesis tries to provide some practical experience to the future translation of Hemingway’s works, in order to get better expression and transference of his style in translated fiction. In addition, this thesis will conclude the translation method to guide the translation of style in fiction.According to Liu Miqing’s stylistic markers theory, stylistic markers are made up of two perspectives:formal markers and non-formal markers. In terms of formal markers, emphasis will be put on lexical markers, syntactic markers and rhetorical markers to probe the original style and the style reproduction of A Farewell to Arms. With regard to the lexical markers, this thesis adopts Antconc software analysis method to calculated out the top twenty most frequently used words, the frequency of different parts of speech, the frequency of the top ten most frequently used verbs, the frequency of the top ten most frequently used adjectives and the frequency of the top ten most frequently used adverbs in A Farewell to Arms. On the basis of the analysis of the lexical markers, this thesis draws the conclusion that the original style is concise in terms of the lexical markers. Based on the conclusion, this thesis will explore the style reproduction of Lin Yijin’s version, what method Lin Yijin utilizes to realize the original style reproduction and evaluate Lin Yijin’s version under the guidance of the standard of Nida’s theory of functional equivalence.In terms of the syntactic markers and rhetorical markers, case analysis will be adopted to explore A Farewell to Arms and Lin Yijin’s version. This thesis will probe into the original style through the case analysis of the syntactic markers and rhetorical markers (simile markers). On the basis of the case analysis, this thesis will explore the original style reproduction in terms of the syntactic markers and rhetorical markers, discuss the way the original style reproduces and make an evaluation according to the standard of Nida’s theory of functional equivalence.With regard to non-formal markers, the thesis also uses the case analysis method to find out the internal quality of the original work, mainly from the expression of the theme, the description of the atmosphere and characterization to explore the original style reproduction of Lin Yijin’s version, to analyze what method to employ to reproduce the original style and to evaluate Lin Yijin’s version according to the standard of Nida’s theory of functional equivalence.Through the analysis, we will find out the original style of A Farewell to Arms, probe into the style reproduction of this fiction, and evaluate the fiction properly under the guidance of the standard of Nida’s theory of functional equivalence. In terms of the translation of formal markers and non-formal markers, Lin Yijin adopts what strategies to reproduce the original style respectively, which provides specific practical experience for the translation of the style reproduction of fiction.
