Simultaneous interpreting is a fairly complex form of human information processing which involves the reception, storage, transformation and transmission of verbal information. On account of this,it is identified by many, especially beginners in the field,as difficult and demanding.Among all the challenges faced by beginning interpreters, the most prominent one might be the loss of information.According to theories of cognitive processing and the Effort Model, problem triggers associated with processing capacity often lead to the result of information loss.Although in simultaneous interpreting, information loss is considered unavoidable,it is necessary for student interpreters to employ proper tactics to minimize the loss and achieve better coordination of efforts. This report analyzes problem triggers for information loss based on a full description of the author's simultaneous interpreting task for China-US Young Scholars Dialogue, and then explores strategies to help interpreters develop their interpreting skills more rapidly and improve performance to the full realization of their potential.
