This thesis is an English-Chinese translation practice report.The selected translation text is Chapter One,Chapter Four and Chapter Five of popular science works entitled 2084:Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Humanity written by British scholar John Lennox.Under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory,the paper aims to analyze the strategies of Functional Equivalence Theory applied in computer popular science text translation,mainly at lexical,syntactic,textual,stylistic and cultural levels respectively.The findings of this paper are listed as follows.Firstly,at the lexical level,proper nouns,technical words and acronyms are translated mainly based on literal translation combined with certain slight adjustments or annotation,nominal structure can be translated by means of conversion so as to achieve functional equivalence.Secondly,the following devices are adopted to realize functional equivalence at the syntactic level: passive voices can be transformed into active ones or reserved in the translated text;method of breaking up the whole into parts is widely applied to translate complex sentences,during which various other means can be used,such as division,restructuring,conversion and so on;the translation of sentences with dash can adopt the methods of addition or restructuring.Thirdly,at the textual level,the cohesive devices should be pointed out explicitly in the target text and the implicit logical relations hidden in the text ought to be expressed through explicitation to organize the texture organically not only in form but also in logic,thus reaching functional equivalence with the source text.Fourthly,at the stylistic level,on one hand,simile,metonymy,personification and parallelism are frequently used and translation should be based on the context;on the other hand,translation methods such as literal translation should be employed to keep rhetorical devices,thus arousing target readers’ interests and achieving functional equivalence in style.Fifthly,at the cultural level,for the content involving specific cultural information,the translator needs to adopt translation strategies including annotation and domestication to make the target readers gain the equivalent reading effect as those source-text readers.Lastly,by virtue of case analyses under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory,it turns out that it is feasible to utilize Functional Equivalence Theory to guide the translation of computer popular science texts.Generally speaking,on the basis of Functional Equivalence Theory,this thesis analyzes the translation text during this translation practice,aiming to study the guiding significance of Functional Equivalence Theory in the translation of computer popular science text,and summarize some effective translation strategies,in order to produce equivalent effect for target text readers as that for source text readers.To this extent,it boasts certain theoretical and practical value.Meanwhile,it is also hoped that this study can provide reference for relative translation practice and researches of computer popular science texts in the future. |
