A Report On The Translation Of Fisher V.University Of Texas At Austin Etal.(Excerpts)

This report is filed based on my translation of a judgment decided by the Supreme Court of the United States on June 23,2016.In the report,an attempt is made to discuss the nature and features of the legal texts in general,and of the present text being translated in particular.Under the text type theory,the text is analyzed to determine applicable translation principles and further decide the corresponding translation strategies and techniques.The translator presents how she reproduced the content and intention of the source text through case study in terms of lexicon and syntax respectively.In lexicon,the translator introduces how she dealt with common words with legal meanings and the nominalization.In syntax,she discusses how she processed the passive voice,attributive clauses and nominal clauses,and the transferred negation commonly found in the American judicial texts.The report consists of four chapters.Chapter One——task description,sketches the background and significance of the task,introduces the nature and features of the source text.Chapter Two——process description,describes the pre-translation preparations,sets forth the applied translation theory,principles,strategies and techniques,presents the schedule of the task,and discusses the post-translation quality control following the translation process.Chapter Three —— case study,the central part of the report,presents how the translator rendered the source text.Chapter Four——conclusion,summarizes the findings,limitations,and suggestions for translators dealing with similar tasks.
