A Report On The Translation Of The Criminal Judgment On Flowers V. Mississippi

This report is based on this author's translation of a judgment issued by the Supreme Court of the United States on June 21,2019 on the criminal case of Flowers v.Mississippi.According to Susan ?ar?evi?'s classification of text types,this judgment fits into the primarily descriptive but also prescriptive texts,representative of typical features of the legal text.Under the guidance of Susan ?ar?evi?'s legal equivalence theory and Li Kexing's basic principles of legal translation,the translator tackles the difficulties encountered in the translation process both at the lexical and syntactical levels.The report consists of four chapters.Chapter One,task description,gives a brief introduction to the content,the type and characteristics of the source text and illustrates the reasons for selecting the source text.Chapter Two,process description,describes the pre-translation preparations,sets forth the applied translation theory,principles,presents the schedule of the task,and discusses the post-translation quality control following the translation process.Chapter Three,case study,the central part of the report,presents how the translator rendered the source text in terms of lexical and syntactical difficulties.Lexically,the translation of both legal terms and ordinary words with legal meanings is analyzed in detail;syntactically,methods employed in translating convoluted clauses and passive structures are explored.Chapter Four as the concluding part,summarizes the major findings,limitations,and suggestions for translators dealing with similar tasks.
