Handbook Translation Strategies From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence

This is a translation report of Developing Quality Technical Information,which was published by IBM to guide and regulate technical writing.With many Chinese companies actively explore overseas markets,the demand for technical writing increased substantially.But compared to its growing demand,the training and handbook on technical writing are still inadequate.The author translates this book for people who are interested in technical writing but don't read English.In order to provide readers with the best readership,the author hopes to find suitable strategies to achieve functional equivalence in handbook translation.This translation report thus analyzes the text functions,text types,language features of the source text,and selects functional equivalence and communicative translation as guiding theories based on the analysis.With the guidance of functional equivalence and communicative translation,the author flexibly adopts translation methods such as addition,annotation,zero translation,omission,conversion of parts of speech to achieve the functional equivalence.This report is divided into four parts,including an overview of this translation practice,description of the translation project,case study and conclusion.By summarizing the project process,the translator finds that using readers' language in handbook translation can help translators to achieve functional equivalence.Besides,the analysis on text type and text function can help translators to select suitable translation strategies.Last but not least,translation strategies needs to be flexibly applied according to the concrete conditions.
