This translation report is an English-Chinese translation report. The translation material is selected from Dorothy Kelly's A Handbook for Translator Trainers.Based on the functional equivalence theory, the author analyzes the problems encountered in the translation process from the aspects of lexical, syntactical and textual level. The source text falls into the category of the informative text. From the perspective of functional equivalence, the corresponding translation methods, such as omission, addition and conversion, should be selected to achieve the correspondence or equivalence between the source text and the target text.At the lexical level, the source text is the informative text which is mainly static. And the nouns are appropriately transformed to the verbs;Syntactically, according to the differences between Chinese and English, long sentences can be divided into several short sentences by adjustment of word order; At the textual level, the source text emphasizes cohesion and coherence, and parataxis can be adopted in translation. The report consists of five parts. The first part introduces the writer, the main content, text type and characteristics of the source text. The second part describes the translation process and quality control. The third part presents Nida's functional equivalence theory and its application in translation. The fourth part is about case study. From the perspective of Nida's functional equivalence theory, the author analyzes the typical translation examples from the aspects of lexical, syntactical and textual level. The fifth part constitutes the conclusion. The author summarizes the specific application and methods of functional equivalence theory in translation practice.Through the analysis of the cases and E-C translation practice, the author expects to provide reference for similar texts.
