Huangdi Neijing hereinafter referred to as Neijing,is the earliest extant traditional classic of Chinese medicine that has the highest position in China. It reveals the medical achievements of ancient times and lays the solid foundation for the development of the traditional Chinese medicine. In this book, many rhetorical devices are frequently used, such as metonymy and metaphor, which enrich the literariness and expressive force of the book.At present, the researches on Neijing are mostly focused on two aspects, rhetoric studies and translation studies, the cognitive researches of it have been concentrated on the cognitive metaphor, few researchers study it from the perspective of cognitive metonymy. The cognitive linguistics which took semantics as the core was raised in the late 1980s.In the view of cognitive linguistics, metaphor and metonymy are important cognitive tools for people to know the objective world and they expand the cognition. This thesis tries to compares and analyzes the metonymy translation of Huangdi Neijing Su Wen from the new perspective of cognitive metonymy. This thesis adopts the qualitative research method and takes the metonymies in Neijing as the research object, analyzing the metonymies and meanwhile comparing the metonymy translations of the five most influential English versions.Based on the particularity of the original text, the author selects the most representative metonymies and divides the metonymies into five kinds:the substitution of the abstract for the concrete metonymy, the substitution of concrete for the abstract metonymy, the substitution of the part for the whole metonymy, the substitution of the whole for the part metonymy as well as the substitution of the accompanying thing for main thing metonymy.Through research, the author finds that:1.Cognitive metonymy is different from the traditional rhetoric metonymy, the former is a kind of cognitive way, however, the latter is merely a kind of rhetorical device.2.Metonymy is frequently used in Neijing, and the translation of metonymy is essential to readers and plays an important role for them.Metonymy in Neijing is achieved through using the comparatively salient and easily perceived part to stand for the uneasily perceived part, which makes the readers to understand source text.3.Due to translators' different academic background and cultural background, translators adopt different translation methods. The research of this thesis makes readers realize the ubiquity of metonymy in Neijing, meanwhile, readers can recognize the importance of cognitive metonymy in the ancient Chinese medicine. The translation on of Neijing contributes significantly to promote the "The Belt and Road" construction and the Chinese culture to go out strategy. The thesis tries to compares and analyzes the metonymy translation of Neijing from the cognitive linguistics, aiming at providing a new research perspective for the English translation of Neijing.
