A Report On The Translation Of Sintering Equipment Texts

This is a report on an English-Chinese translation practice based on a foreign-related project undertaken by a well-known design institute in China.The research scope of this practice is the sintering machine of machinery manufacturing industry.The main purpose of the practice is to introduce some relevant technology from abroad.The report explores the translation methods and strategies of technological English and the application of translation theories in a certain industry under the guidance of the theory “faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance” proposed by Yan Fu.The stylistic features of the source text is introduced,which is characterized by “relatively longer morphology”,“abbreviations”,“passive sentences” and “attributive clauses”,etc.The author also summarizes the translation techniques both at lexical and syntactic levels such as “explicitation” in words,conversion of word classes,extension of words meanings,addition and omission,inversion of the original sentence order,explicitation of logical relations,mutual conversion between subordinate clauses and phrases,conversion of sentence members or structures.Technical terms and jargons of the source text are also discussed.The problems and difficulties occurred in practice were basically solved.An eligible translation can be presented to related enterprises,which has great reference value in this field.During the process of translation,the author realized that a good translation requires not only excellent language ability,but also some related professional knowledge,a better understanding of the source text,and plenty of experience in applying translation theories to the technological field.
