Chinese Translation Of Adpositional Structure In Long English Sentences Under The Perspective Of Generalized Topic Structure

English to Chinese translation of long sentence remains difficult in practice.And adpositional structures plague English sentences.A study shows that there is one adposition in every eight English words statistically.Chinese,however,relies much less on adpositional structures.So,importance must be attached to adpositional structure in the translation of the two languages.This study is set to analyse adpositional structure by introducing Generalized Topic Structure(GTS),and provide a new approach to the translation of adpositional structure.Naming-Telling Clause(N-T Clause)is adopted to analyse English sentence on the basis of GTS.And Parsing-Translating-Assembling translation model(PTA model)is designed to make a probe into translation of adpositional structure.By applying N-T Clause to the analysis of English sentence and PTA model to the production of Chinese sentence,over 3,000 sentences are processed.Also,five sentence structures under GTS are summarised,which are Stack Structure,New Branch Structure,Converging Structure,Post-positioning Structure and Closed Segment,and translation methods of adpositional structures are displayed.From the fruit of our work,we are able to answer the three research questions that drive this study:(1)GTS is applicable to the analysis of English sentence,(2)The English to Chinese translation can be improved under GTS and(3)GTS can help perfect the translation of adpositional structure in long English sentence.
