Hector Louis Berlioz famous French composer,conductor and music critics of the19 thcentury.His work is great in structure and various in subject.Berlioz not only wrote symphonies and operas but also composed certain amount of melodies.Actually,the Romantic literature and poetry have influenced his composition and he agreed that music and poetry share the similarity in structure.One of his most famous representative work is Song Cycle Les Nuits d'été and it has produced long-term influence on the writing and developing of French melodies.This paper is divided into five chapters to illustrate on Les Nuits d'été.The first chapter is introduction;the next four chapters is analysis on its background,musical and singing skills.The second chapter introduced life story of Berlioz and his composition;the third chapter explained the background of composing Les Nuits d'été and analyzed six songs lyrics meaning in Les Nuits d'été.The fourth chapter focuses on musical analysis while the last chapter is analysis on singing skills.In the fourth chapter,the musical analysis is illustrated in the four aspects below: melody,range,tone strength and piano accompaniments.And in the last chapter,I picked two songs,the second one Le Spectre de la Rose and the last one L'?le inconnue from it and analyzed their different features to support my paper.Analysis on Le Spectre de la Rose is from five aspects of speed,intonation,decorative musical words vs.progressive musical phrases,breath and singing vs.Piano accompaniments;while the L'?le inconnue is on speed,intonation,voice position uniform,breath and singing vs.Piano accompaniments these five issues.At last,the paper compared these two songs' singing skills from three aspects: speed,intonation and breath.
