Due to the increasing openness of China, international exchanges have been held in many spheres such as trade and culture. As a result, the market of translation and interpreting in China has been expanding.Telephone interpreting service is expanding its share in markets at a fast yet stable pace in China.Consequently,it is urgently important for those who are used to traditional interpreting to look at telephone interpreting and figure out how it can work effectively. Therefore,a summary of difficulties hidden in telephone interpreting and factors causing these difficulties are highly recommended. This thesis focuses on real situations the author met during his work for the 2nd Youth Olympic Games as a telephone interpreter. After encountering challenges in the telephone interpreting process, the author tries to figure out the influencing factors behind those challenges, which are linguistic knowledge and extra-linguistic knowledge.Following these two influencing factors, the author successfully finds out interpreting difficulties respectively, and categorizes them into linguistic and extra-linguistic groups.Hindsight is refined from the practice to evaluate the performance of the author himself, and is expected to shed a light on other telephone interpreting practice in the future.
