After China’s entry into WTO, with the flourishing development of oureconomic construction and increasingly enhanced international communication, ineconomic field, various kinds of business transactions are going on by our side. Thisalso generates a huge demand in domestic business interpreters with higherrequirements. Most previous studies on business interpreting are from the perspectiveof vocabulary and skill. Studies on the practical level are comparatively fewer.However, business interpreting includes many cultural factors and has its uniquefeatures. If interpreters cannot correctly recognize and handle them, the interpreting isnot likely to be successful. Besides, the success of business interpreting dependsmostly on the interpreters’ extra-linguistic knowledge. As a result, this dissertationwill discuss the application of extra-linguistic knowledge in business interpreting withexamples under the guidance of Gile’s Comprehension Equation.This dissertation firstly gives a general view of the previous studies onextra-linguistic knowledge in business interpreting. Then, it introduces the definitionand process of interpreting as well as the features of business interpreting and mattersneed attention in business interpreting. In the following part, the author mainlydiscusses Gile’s Comprehension Equation which is the theoretic bone of thisdissertation, to prove the application of extra-linguistic knowledge in businessinterpreting and elaborate its category, importance and the relationship betweenextra-linguistic knowledge and business interpreting. In addition, the dissertationanalyzes acquisition of extra-linguistic knowledge and extra-linguistic knowledgebarriers in business interpreting. Moreover, it gives examples to show how to removebarriers in business interpreting with extra-linguistic knowledge. Based on the aboveanalysis, some suggestions to interpreters have been pointed out to inspire moreinterpreters.
