Charitable Activities And Localization Of Overseas Chinese Society

This thesis considers Poh Teck Tung Foundation to be my study object,combs the major charity activities of Poh Teck Tung Foundation from 1936 to 1957,then analyzes the localization development path of Poh Teck Tung Foundation.On this basis,discuss the effect of charitable activities on localization of overseas Chinese society in Thailand.Except for the preface and conclusion,full text is divided into four chapters.Firstly,preface mainly introduces the research of localization of overseas Chinese society and charity.The second chapters mainly introduces the social background and profile of Poh Teck Tung Foundation.From the third to the fifth chapters,I analyze two problems: one is the development trend of Poh Teck Tung Foundation's charitable activities,by analysis of the activities of Poh Teck Tung Foundation keeping on self-adjusting and developing charity under different political backgrounds and international relations.The other is the role of Poh Teck Tung Foundation's charitable activities in the localization of overseas Chinese society in Thailand,by analysis of the influence of charitable localization on overseas Chinese society in Thailand.The conclusion is a general review of localized development process of Poh Teck Tung Foundation,and then explore the issue of charitable activities and overseas Chinese society in Thailand.This study shows that,after the reorganization,Poh Teck Tung Foundation has gone through three stages of development.First,from 1936 to 1944,Poh Teck Tung Foundation has changed from Chineseization to localization.Second,from 1945 to1947,localization has slowed down.Third,from 1948 to 1957,localization has began to accelerate development.The localization process of Poh Teck Tung Foundation isthe epitome of the localization of overseas Chinese society in Thailand,but also has a positive effect on the the localization of Thai overseas Chinese society.On the one hand,it commissioned the ethnic relations of the Thai and Chinese,made Poh Teck Tung Foundation and even overseas Chinese society gradually accepted by the Thai people.On the other hand,it improved the relation with the Thai government.By assisting the government in dealing with social problems,Sharing the social management and social service pressure,maintaining the stability and prosperity of Thai society,Poh Teck Tung Foundation was recognized and supported by the Thai government.Thus it promoted the localization of Thai overseas Chinese society.
