Discourse Cohesion In Translation:Report On The Translation Of The Ultimate Tea Diet

Translation is not confined to the grammatical level only but belongs to a broader range of meaning selection and socialization process.Entrusted by a researcher and master of Chinese tea,the translator has translated The Ultimate Tea Diet for all tea lovers.The translated text aims to provide information and reference of a tea diet for Chinese tea lovers.It is an informative text and tries to achieve coherence on the basis of faithfulness.Under the guidance of Cohesion Theory proposed by Halliday and Hasan,this paper attempts to research the application of discourse cohesion in translation practice of informative texts according to the excerpts from The Ultimate Tea Diet.Based on structure,context and culture which are three interrelated and interactive aspects,four cohesive devices including reference,substitution,conjunction and collocation are applied to achieve faithfulness to the original text.Cohesive devices are methods while discourse coherence is the ultimate object.Considering the cultural background and language characteristics,the translator deals with the source text flexibly to convey a qualified translation.Thus,it is of great significance to implement the research on discourse cohesion and apply the achievement to the practical E-C translation,especially by several cohesive devices.
