| This study is a translation report on the excerpts of the Sacred and Profane Love Machine(1974)by Iris Murdoch.The section from page 90 to 113 of the novel is selected to be translated and analyzed as the report material(about 14784 English words).The Sacred and Profane Love Machine was completed in Murdoch’s early days,depicting an extramarital affair in which the protagonist Blaise owns a happy family,his wife Harriet and his son David.He happened to acquaint Emily during his work as a psychologist who then became his admirer.They secretly lived together and raised one son entitled Luca.The excerpts chosen mainly tells about Blaise’s struggle and hesitation whether to disclose his affair with Emily to his wife;His talk with Monty was relentlessly criticized to be “centered about himself”;At last his wife Harriet was informed of his past doing outside through the letter written on Blaise’s behalf.All these things demonstrated a vivid picture of main characters in the novel,and choice characters tend to make and their acts foreseeing their destiny in the end.The translation report consists of four parts: Chapter one assumes the task description including task background,chosen material,writing style of the novel and significance of this research.Chapter two would display the whole translation process,focusing on before translation,while-translating and proofreading and translation quality control.Chapter three is a careful and detailed analysis of source text,about its language features,such as symbols,philosophical metaphors,sentence patterns and vocabulary.Main points of the report attribute to case study of both theory and practice.For instance,confronted with specific translation problems,different strategies are flexibly used to deal with.The last chapter concludes and exams thoroughly the entire translation text to note down some methods and looks forward to a better translation. |
