A Study Of The Phantom Tollbooth Under The Guidance Of Nida's Dynamic Equivalence

This thesis,by employing Eugene Nida's dynamic equivalence,intends to expound the untranslatable elements in Norton Juster's The Phantom Tollbooth.One of Juster's famous children's books,The Phantom Tollbooth is written with lucid and vivid language and peppered with many rhetorical devices such as alliterations,allusions and puns.The extensive use of rhetorical devices increases difficulty of translation and causes untranslatability.This thesis,under the guidance of dynamic equivalence and with the purpose of achieving the dynamic equivalent effect in translation,analyzes the untranslatable elements from the perspectives of form and meaning and discusses related translation strategies.Humble as the author of this thesis is,it is her wild wish to make some contribution,however insignificant it may be,to the study and translation practice of children's literature.This thesis consists of five chapters.The first chapter gives a simple introduction to The Phantom Tollbooth and its author Norton Juster.The second chapter briefly introduces Eugene Nida's dynamic equivalence and discusses previous studies on the translation of children's literature and on untranslatability.The third chapter expounds the untranslatable elements in The Phantom Tollbooth from the perspectives of form and meaning while the fourth chapter suggests translation strategies for the untranslatable elements discussed in chapter three.The last chapter is the conclusion of this thesis,which illustrates the findings and limitations of this thesis and gives suggestions for further practice and study.The author of this thesis hopes that this work will provide some help for the translation of The Phantom Tollbooth and can to some extent serve as reference to the practice and study of children's literature.
