With the rapid development of science and technology, science fiction has gained a wide appreciation among the Chinese readers. Thus, science fiction translation is of great importance in bringing in this literature genre. However, research on science fiction translation has been marginalized with only a few works on translation study in this field. Thus great importance should be given to science fiction translation. The Elixir, published in 1975,is one of the book series authored by Canadian science fiction master Laurence Manning. This translation report will be based on the translation of Book Five: The Elixir, which is conducted by the author alone.Guided by Viktor's defamiliarization theory, this report aims to focus on discussing translation strategies to reproduce the defamiliarization device of neologisms in the target text.As wide-used defamiliarization devices in science fictions, neologisms represent for the unique literariness of science fictions. Thus, how to retain defamiliarization in the translated version to conform with the unfamiliarity of the original text is the priority of the translation of neologisms.Classifying the neologisms in the source text into semantic and pragmatic neologisms, the translator proposes the translation strategies respectively: for semantic neologisms, literal translation shall be adopted to retain the defamiliarization style of the source text;for pragmatic neologisms, free translation shall be adopted to recreate a new defamiliarization device in the target text to conform with the source text. The translator hopes that through this project,to improve her translation skills,to gain a better understanding of the neologism translation, and also to enrich both the practice and research of science fiction translation.
