A Contrastive Analysis Of The Interpreting Strategies Adopted By CCTV-5 Interpreters And Student Interpreter From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

Interpreting serves as an important bridge in China's conducting exchanges with foreign countries.The growing globalization has introduced such exchanges into more and more fields and occasions,in which interpreting is playing an even more prominent role.The interpreting in sport-TV program,including the interpreting in NBA games presented by CCTV-5 is relatively special,which would arouse people's interest in the current studies in this field,in commentators' interpreting competence and strategies possibly adopted by CCTV-5 commentators in the process of presenting the NBA games and in whether student interpreters would adopt different approaches in interpreting the same content.The author transcribed all of the scenarios of interpreting throughout 6 games of 2014-2015 NBA Finals for further analysis of interpreting strategies from the perspective of relevance theory.There are several reasons why this very theory is applied in this paper.First of all,the relevance theory puts great emphasis on the importance of context,upon which the effectiveness of communication hinges.And the notion of context is fluid and subject to changes triggered by the introduction of new information,which luckily coincides with the ever-changing and fast-moving nature of the NBA Finals.Another reason lies in relevance between the speakers(coaches,sideline journalists,players)and the ongoing games,and the optimal relevance sought after by the(commentator and student)interpreters for the audience.That is why the relevance theory figures so prominently in this thesis.After transcription,a contrastive analysis between the commentator interpreters and the student interpreter was conducted to analyze the differences in choosing interpreting strategies.Through analysis,it is found that commentator interpreters mainly adopted six interpreting strategies: supplementation of context and amplification,including explanatory amplification and commentary amplification,omission,restructuring and imitation of tone.It is also suggested that commentator interpreter make proper attempt to be more interpreter-minded,and the student interpreter to do more practices and seek more experiences of field interpreting and more related knowledge.
