This thesis,based on the Theory of Relevance proposed by Sperber and Wilson,mainly presents the problems in practical simultaneous interpreting for speeches and discusses corresponding interpreting strategies.It takes Remarks by President Obama at Howard University Commencement Ceremony in 2016 as the case.First,a brief introduction on the Theory of Relevance is given;second,after the simultaneous interpreting task is finished,six difficult problems in the task are summarized and the corresponding strategies are proposed,which include: Culture-loaded words: explain the specific meaning based on the ostensive information and the known background information;Euphemism: convey the meaning regardless of the euphemism in the source language.Idioms in the specific context: adopt deverbalization to achieve the optimal relevance;Ellipsis: add or repeat certain words in the source language;Feelings of the speaker: add words to convey the feelings;Humorous expressions: add more words to interpret the humor on the basis of the ostensive-inferential model.This thesis is expected to provide some implications on how to apply the theory to the interpreting practice through this simultaneous interpreting task.In this way,Chinese people can have a better understanding about the history and culture of the US through the successful interpreting of the speech and some reference can be provided to guide similar interpreting tasks.
