Literary translation, like writing that it is based on,is a specific activity under a certain cultural-historical context and is thus full of ideological imprints of certain times. In translation theory after the Cultural Turn of the 1980 s,especially in Andre Lefevere's terms, translation is a kind of rewriting in a process,in which ideological factors influence how the translator deals with the original text.To be sure, ideological registers exist not only in the source text but in the translation product, although manners of ideological presentation in writing and its translational rewriting may take different forms.Taking Lefevere's perspective on translation as manipulative rewriting into consideration, this study explores how translation is influenced with ideological factors in certain historical periods by comparing two Chinese translations of J.D.Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye.Through comparative analyses, this study looks into the cultural contexts,in which Shi Xianrong and Sun Zhongxun complete their translations,in order to reveal how ideological factors work in the translation process. At the same time, this study examines linguistic details of the translations, looking into the translators' strategies in using dictions, language style and sentence structure,to flesh out Lefevere's otherwise abstract conception of translation as ideological manipulation process. The descriptive method and the comparative method are used in this research. The result indicates that the two translators are influenced by the different social ideologies of their times and their individual ideologies and they adopt different translation strategies in three aspects of dictions, language style and sentence structure in their translation processes consequently.
