Traditional translation studies focused on the linguistic perspective, such as source and target text comparison and translation standards. The uprising of the culture school puts more stress on the relationship between translation and the exterior world. Based on Louise Althusser's ideology theory and Lefevere's Rewriting Theory of translation, the thesis aims to explore the ideological manipulation in the whole process of literary translation with a case study of Shi Xianrong's translation of J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye.With literature review of theories on ideology, this thesis tries to find out the manipulations of different ideological factors. The thesis analyzed the ideological manipulation in the literary translation process from the perspectives of national ideology, patronage ideology and individual ideology. The thesis explores ideological manipulations in the literary translation process of The Catcher in the Rye. First, the national ideology in the 1960s in China exerted great influence in the choice of source texts. Most of the literary translations are from the former Soviet Union and the works written by progressive writers. Second, the patronage ideology during the 1960s and 1980s exerted great influence on the translation circulation and publication. In the 1960s, the translation of The Catcher in the Rye was a restricted circulation publication of"Yellow Cover Book". The open distribution of the translation took place in 1983. Third, taking Shi's own individual ideology into consideration, we could find the manipulation examples of different aspects in his translation. Shi's choices of the original text, his motivation of the translation and his translation strategy were manipulated covertly or overtly by his own individual ideology. In a whole, the thesis finds out the national dominant ideology is the most important one in a society, which influences both patronage ideology and the translator's individual ideology. Patronage manipulates the circulation and publication of the translation. Individual ideology influences the translation motivation and translation strategy. Ideology makes the translation be consistent with the relative ideologies to some considerable extent.
