Study On Publicness Issue Of Art Intervention In Rural Public Space

Chinese rural construction which has started as of the Republic of China has expanded its emphasis on culture and education in the early stage to emphasis on social system reform,ethical analysis and self-expression,etc.of the rural areas after foundation of PRC.Rural construction has been developed vigorously since new rural construction was put forward at the Fifth Plenary Session of 16 th Central Committee of CPC.Rural public space draws extensive attention of the scholars because of its important functions in rural order construction and rural area integration.Meanwhile,artists also start to participate in rural construction.They held art exhibitions with regard to rural reconstruction by arts.However,current art intervention pays less attention to the publicness of rural public space,and research on rural construction by arts also focuses too much on the practice of certain artists while ignoring the attention,participation and study on rural public area and villagers.Related cases and discussions mainly emphasize on rural areas in inland region while paying less attention to the rapidly changing rural areas in developed coastal regions.Therefore,this paper tries to start from relevant researches on rural public space and art intervention to,in line with evolution of art intervention and public space in Phoenix old village in Shenzhen,analyze the influence of art intervention on rural public space as well as the issue of absence of publicness.Phoenix old village has experienced three development periods of traditional rural settlement,urban village and tourism old village.This is its particularity which is different from urbanization of villages in inland regions.This paper analyzes the evolution of public space and art intervention in Phoenix old village during these three periods to expound the status quo of art intervention in public space of Phoenix old village based on indigenous people,immigrants and tourists from the following four perspectives: large art exhibition hall Phoenix Art Exhibition Center and Phoenix Academy,the public space of ancient dwellings that transform into art studios,the public space of business streets in the old village,the public space of outdoor plaza.Also,case analysis is carried out on each case by means of visual analysis.Although the public space of Phoenix old village has been restored and reconstructed,and is more opened,it's not continuous and tends to be homogeneous.According to this paper,Phoenix old village lacks of publicness,including,absence of public topics,reduction in public communication and insufficient public participation.The paper holds that these problems are caused by the follows: failure in controlling the essence of public space amid construction,invasion of private mechanism,inequality between subjects,art intervention focusing on decorative function only.Based on such absence of publicness in rural public space,this paper puts forward that an emphasis should be laid on the follows to introduce art intervention to construction of rural public space: firstly,the social function of art intervention should be clarified,with a focus on the balance among subjects of public space;secondly,localized intervention should be carried out in line with the actual conditions in the rural areas,so as to develop cultural creative industry of the old villages reasonably;finally,the formulation of related governmental policies should be perfected to realize balanced economic and cultural development of the old villages while avoiding commercial suggestions regarding art intervention.
