On The Translation Of Chinese Film Titles From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

With the acceleration of China's opening up reform and the development of cross-cultural communication,the interaction between China and other countries in the world,especially the English speaking countries,has become more and more frequent.As one of the most influential and popular cultural transmission tools,films have been the indispensable medium.As the “eye” of films,the film titles determine the first impression of the audience on the films.Thus the translation of film titles is of great importance.So far,however,there are a lot of studies related to the E-C translation of film titles,few has been involved in the C-E translation.In general,filmtitles have three functions: cultural function,informative function,and aesthetic function.A good English translation of a Chinese film title would help the foreign audience understand the film,evoke their interests,and make their enjoyable.In light of the core of German Functionalist theory,Skopos theory,this thesis proposes the audience targeted C-E translation of film titles.Skopos theory points out that translation is apurposeful activity,and the translation of film titles is a purposeful cross-culture communication.Under Skopos theory,the C-E translation of film titles can be studied from the perspective ofcultural aspect,informative aspect and aesthetic aspect.The translationapproachesemployedinvolvestransliteration,literal translation,and free translation and so on.Based on Skopos theory,translators can adopt any appropriate translation methods for a best translation of the film titles.Theoretically,this thesis shows howSkopos theory plays a crucial role in the C-E translation of film titles;practically,this thesis has supplied more flexible translation approaches to the C-E translation of film titles.
