Lin Yutang And Europeanized Vernacular Writings

When it comes to Vernacular Movement,we will automatically think of Hu shi and Lu xun.But actually,Lin Yutang also performed a significant part at the initial stage of that movement.In this thesis,we discuss Lin Yutang,the controversial man of letters at modern times,about his propositions and practice in Vernacular Movement as well as his transformation of notions at 1930 s.We divided this dissertation mainly into three parts: Lin Yutang and the historical context of advocating Vernacular Movement,Lin and Europeanized vernacular writings,and his application of vernacular writings,to analyze his attitude towards vernacular and the role he played in this consequential movement,lucubrate the reason why Lin made reflections on Europeanized vernacular and then transformed from vigorously promoting vernacular to proposing works of quotation,and clarify the non-operability of this advocate and the inconsistency between his theoretical propositions and literary creation.Several research methods are employed in this dissertation,such as intensive reading,material analysis,archival collection,inductive summarization and etc.Apart from these,we integrated history and linguistics into the painstaking analysis of the practice of Lin's literary composition and interpretation.This article can be divided into three parts:First,we make definitions about the concepts of vernacular,vernacular writings as well as Europeanized vernacular,and analyze the relationship between vernacular and vernacular writings,vernacular and Europeanization.We try to establish Lin Yutang's role and attitude in Vernacular Movement vernacular writings and Lin's voice as well as practice around the New Culture Movement.Second,we straighten out Lin's implementation about Europeanized vernacular at the initial stage of New Culture Movement,and figure out his conspicuous inclination toward Europeanization through five parts,including subject expansion and sentence extension.We also illustrate the reason why he transformed from vigorously promoting vernacular to proposing works of quotation.Third,after analyzing Lin's literature and interpretation works after 1933,we unravel that his practice on interpretation and quotation still bore prominent features of Europeanization.The works of quotation he advocated are just a kind of quaint Europeanized vernacular,do not belong to real humor and intellectual disposition but a kind of leisure.Based on this,we then make our elaboration that his proposition about works of quotation was only a “deflector” at 1930 s.
