Robert Delaunay(1885-1941),is one of the earliest painter that tried abstract painting.In1912,Delaunay led Orphism with the help of Guillaume Apollinaire, bringing back and redefining the significant meaning of Color in Paul Cezanne and Fauvism but discarded by Cubism, meanwhile he utilized the new color and shape to reach to a new abstract order and theme, also reapplied the three main aspects of vision in painting back to painting, which were vision acquirement, color supreme and body movement. However, this kind of master gradually sank to oblivion.this thesis elected the early masterpieces of Delaunay from 1909 to 1913 with the “window”motif and tried to find out how those windows changed from three-dimensional classical one to a flatness and anti-naturalistic modern grid. The main contents of first chapter includes 3 parts. The first part briefly introduces the creation background effects and decline reason of Delaunay,The second part discusses the research status of Delaunay and "window";The third part discusses the "window" motif in the development of the whole art history, from the "self-contained" to the "grid".And theoretical basis in this dissertation are "self-contained box","grid","frame" theory of Gao Minglu and structuralism theory of Rosalind Krauss. The second chapter works on two series of Delaunay's magnum opus,"Eiffel Tower" and "The City” in 1909.It discusses the creation background during cubist period and studies how he used cubism technique to achieve internal deconstruction of the" self-contained ".The later work," The City”,had began to develop into modern grid, but single point perspective and depth of the space still remains. The third chapter mainly focus on the "window" series Which is the main break though of Delaunay in Orpheus period. This chapter discusses the movement process of Orpheus. On one hand,it discusses how Delaunay was trying to use color and contrast to put the color to the height of the content of a work from color theory; On the other hand, use visual culture to study how Delaunay perform the forming process of visual image and then moving forward to space overlapping.Although this series of works used ordering and complanation grid structure,it still failed to achieve color as the solo content and structure of pictures, nor do the modern grid. The fourth chapter assesses the First Disk, which was Delaunay's achievement of pure abstract in 1913.Then discusses the contradiction between flatness and depth, matter and spirit of First Disk, and its relationship with modern grid. The fifth chapter is combined with conclusion and follow-up research prospect.
