The Construction Of Gender Roles In Ang Lee's Films Under Cultural Perspective

Ang Lee is a landscape,both inside and outside the film;Ang Lee is a phenomenon,both in domestic and foreign country.Since the eighty and ninety's in last century,with multi-cultural identity,Ang Lee knows well into Chinese and Western culture and gender issues.This study is based on the research of "gender and media".As for the research method,this study attempts to combine feminist with film author studies as theoretical resources to explore the gender roles of Ang Lee's films.The results are as follows.There are roughly three kinds of scenes(carriers)in his films including family,state and Jianghu(society).Among them,the fathers in the traditional Chinese family occupy the core of the patriarchal system,however with the modernization of Western culture,the father has no choice but to compromise to achieve reconciliation;Secondly,the young generation "prodigal son" flees the family,in order to get rid of the shackles of the father,looking for more freedom of personality and The final heroes here appear as "person",who are different from the standard Hollywood heroes in the image of super heroes so as to rebuild nonviolent heroism and anti-war narratives.The female images in Ang Lee's films show that female discourse spaces are obscured by strong male discourse and cultural traditions.But the women in the country choose to alienate politics and revolution,showing their gender awareness.At the same time women in Jianghu are brave enough to pursuit love and freedom,which digest the traditional martial arts in the binary opposition narrative model.As for the reason,the construction of gender roles in the films is inseparable from the cultural identity of Ang Lee.His characters always present peaceful and calm quality.He gave the anxious father a way out,let the prodigal son return home.Western cultural values also enabled him to pursue the individual values and feminine consciousness,but he did not strengthen the opposition of men and women,but pursued a kind of gender harmony,and universal human love.
