The Art Of “Third Space” Narrative In Khaled Hosseini's Novels

The novel of The Kite Runner,which is written by Afghanistan American writer Khaled Hosseini,immediately occupied the major selling list no longer after it was published.Then,his two works,A Thousand Splendid Suns and The Mountains Echoed,keep good sales constantly and boom a "Hussein hot" in the whole world.Khaled Hosseini was born in Afghanistan but moved to America before the "911" terrorist attacks.Because of the identity of the first Afghan writing in English,there are extremely distinct personal characteristics in his novels which were written after the special time.Therefore,his works have caused widespread controversy in the world.The works show the life of ordinary people in Afghanistan to the world and create an idealized "third space" that combines realistic social and beautiful vision.He hopes to reach racial and gender equality,the balance of identity in this space and the fusion of culture.In this paper,the spatial criticism theory of narratology and Edward Soria's "third space" theory are used to analyze his three famous works.We can finally reveal the cultural connotation of his works with the method of close reading and background research.The paper is divided into four chapters.The first chapter mainly introduces Khaled Hosseini and his works,as well as domestic and international research status.The second chapter analyzes the system of "third space" in his works from the "home" as the pointcut of the physical space,the "memory" as the entry point of the spiritual space,as well as the idealized “third space” fusions of previous two points.Through the narrative strategy of "third space",the third chapter analyzes the transformation of the inner perspective,the repeated use of the image and the staggered space-time structure in his works from perspective,image and time respectively.The last chapter describes the "breakthrough" and the recovery of the status of immigrant intellectuals with the author's writing background and expectations.It is not only beneficial for Afghanistan to show and creat an ideal society to all people,but also provide a way for the South Asian literary creation after the 911 terrorist attacks.
