This is a report on the translation of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie,a novel published by Muriel Spark in 1961.The novel mainly describes the teacher Miss Jean Brodie and her students,Brodie Set,and a series of stories about them and other teachers.The original author gives a detailed description of persons' appearance and a large amount of dialogues,shaping many typical images,which has rendered the story an impressive and popular reading material.The theme of this novel is that idealists are not suitable for the career of teacher,as their subjective opinions are more likely to make students draw distorted ideas,which is pathetic.This report elaborates on how to translate a novel on its person images,historical allusions and poems,especially on the translation of a series of rhetorical devices under the guidance of Zheng Hailing's theory aesthetic nature and figurativeness of literary translation,aiming at exquisitely representing the artistic image of original text in the target language.Through a large amount of translation practices,the translator has concluded two sides: the translator is expected to,firstly,guarantee the conveyance of the information and content of original text in pursuit of a reproduction of its meanings;secondly,because the artistic image is of great significance to a literary work,the translator should improve his artistic ability and use another literary language to present the artistic image of original text with image thinking on the basis of a thorough understanding of the essence of original text.This report falls into four chapters.Chapter one introduces description of the translation project,including the source of the translation project,the introduction to the writer and the description of the novel.Chapter two contains a description of the project completion process,including the duration,preparation,evaluation and modification process of translation,and relevant theory applied.Chapter three analyzes the translation with the help of detailed cases.Chapter four contains a summary about the translation of the novel and some implications for future practices.
