Based on the the theory of Imagology in Comparative Literature, this dissertation analyzes the image of China during the period of the Republic of China in the view of the Swiss missionary Alfred Bosshardt.Besides, this paper is also engaged in the contrastive study between two originals and the Chinese translations with medio-translatology theories,so that his writing strategy in the depiction of the images and the adaptations of source texts in these Chinese transformations can come to light. In this paper,Alfred Bosshardt's life stories, the spread of Christianity in China, the similarities and differences between China and the West,as well as the commentary of the domestic population on the Bosshardt's story are all described in detail,in order to analyze three stages of dynamic image of China, which have been created by Bosshardt. The first image type is the fantasy before entering China.Bosshardt refines purposefully the image of China on the basis of the introductions of others, which shows both his East-worship and disdain for the Chinese culture, because of the exclusiveness of Christianity and the requirement of expansion as well as aggression. The second phase of the image comes from the field experience after Bosshardt traveled around China, and appreciated the local conditions and customs of different places.Just because of this, his first repugnant attitude to China has been softened, and then transformed into amicable attitude.Different from the previous missionaries, who focused on China's upper class, such as the feudal rulers or dignitaries,Alfred described mostly the Chinese Red Army and the Long March as the most part of his China image. In the writing there are his appreciation and gratefulness for the Red Army.Alfred mentioned the hardship of the Long March as well as the courage, goodwill and wisdom of the Red Army. The third stage of China image by Alfred is deeply influenced by strong yearning.Because of the political problem and cultural difference,he must leave China, but his whole life has close relationship with China, therefore he shows complex emotion to China. In two works,Alfred Bosshardt skillfully uses vocabulary or word groups, which implies his emotional change to China. This paper selects three perspectives for analysis: 1.Thechange of the title of the Red Army;2.The use of “coolie”;3.The word combination for describing Chinese-style.The "personal narrative" approach is adopted by Bosshardt,in this way,he deliberately ignores the contradiction between Christianity and Chinese Society, and tries to evade the relationship between Christianity and the national government or local tyrants. While he is writing "the other",just wants to show the negation of “the other”,in order to express self. For example,he purposely describes the backwardness of Chinese society,in order to highlight the superiority of Christian culture. This article finally affirms the unique value of the Chinese image by Bosshardt, through comparing with Arnolis Hayman et al,which shows the objectivity and authority of Bosshardt's works. His Chinese image is not a single image like black or white, but a complex three-dimensional image. As the Chinese,we must think about how to build our own national image, establish cultural self-confidence,and better publicize the image of the country.
