Kurosawa Kiyoshi started his formal cinema career in 1983,and he has been directing for 35 years until today.During his long film career,he is always active in genre filmmaking and different genre elements' cooperation, which is related to his rich experience in multiple identities. At the time of the bankrupt of studio system Kurosawa was in the Nikkatsu Corporation as an assistant director gathering experience;he also made a lot of 8mm experimental films during his college time, moreover in the nineties he participated in video making as well.It is the different patterns of attempts that give him unrestrained style and pursuits. In his works, especially the horror films which occupy most of his time and history are seen as his representative works. And he also led the second trend of Modern Japanese Horror, known as the godfather of Japanese Horror. This paper chooses his horror features from the twenty years(1997-2017)as the research object.By presenting the life and production process of Kurosawa, and his ambiguity(duality)or the dual opposition decomposition-thinking style as the breakthrough point,we can deeply discuss and analyze the films which reflect this thinking style. The horror film theme of Kurosawa can be divided into two categories: mental control and ghost films;the duality of relations is the important motif through his whole works.Because of the diversity of relations, the duality in his movies is emerged in different aspects. In addition, the relation between the past and present is another concrete manifestation of duality in the film. This paper attempts to fill the blank in research of Kurosawa, with Kurosawa as a starting point, raise the attention to contemporary Japanese filmmakers and the development of Japanese horror films.
