On Translator's Subjectivity In The Translation Of Chinese Science Fiction From A Hermeneutic Perspective

In 2015,Liu Cixin,a Chinese science fiction writer,won the Hugo Award for Best Novel by virtue of the first of a trilogy named Remembrance of Earth's Past—The Three-Body Problem.He became the first person to receive this prestigious award in Asia,and pushed Chinese science fiction to a new stage of development and creation.In view of the long-standing marginalized status of Chinese science fiction,its road to the world urgently requires translation scholars to strengthen the efforts to make researches on its translation and therefore to lay a solid foundation for its future development.Since the cultural turn in the 1970's,the translator gradually stepped out of the traditional marginalized situation and the feature of translator's subjectivity were gradually excavated.The translator,as the subject of translation process,plays a decisive role in interpretation.Translator's subjectivity is considered a kind of subjective initiative and it's manifested by the translator in translation process in order to meet the demands of culture in the target language on the premise of respecting the original work.According to Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutic theory,translation is a process of understanding with characteristics of openness,innovation and subjectivity,and the meaning produced by understanding is a new one possessed with translator's subjective “prejudice”.In view of this,hermeneutics provides a new explanation for the existence of translator's subjectivity— confirming the significant role of the translator in the translation process.Thus,it is feasible to study the translator's subjectivity in the translation of Chinese science fiction from the perspective of Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics.This thesis is to analyze the exertion of translator's subjectivity in the translation of The Three-Body Problem from the aspects of historicity of understanding,prejudice and fusion of horizons,and demonstrate the vital status of translator's subjectivity in the translation process of Chinese science fiction.The research has found that translator's subjectivity is ubiquitous in the C-E translation of The Three-BodyProblem from the perspective of hermeneutics.Translator's subjectivity is fully reflected in the translation of slangs and proper nouns due to the translator's historical existence;the embodiment of translator's subjectivity is greatly influenced by the translator's positive legitimate prejudice and negative blind prejudice formed before the understanding and interpreting of the ST;translator's subjectivity is completely embodied in fusions of horizons at both linguistic and cultural levels.The article is divided into six parts: it starts with part of the preamble which includes a brief introduction to The Three-Body Problem and its translator,literature review to Chinese science fiction translation.Then,it comes to theoretical framework which mainly focuses on introducing translator's subjectivity,Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics and the relationship between the two.Afterwards,the following three chapters are the case study part designed to analyze and demonstrate the embodiment of translator's subjectivity in the C-E translation of The Three-Body Problem from the aspects of historicity of understanding,prejudice and fusion of horizons respectively in the three chapters.The last chapter is the conclusion part which summarizes the reflection of translator's subjectivity in the C-E translation of The Three-Body Problem from the perspective of Hermeneutics.
