A Research On The English Translation Of The Three-body Problem From The Perspective Of Reception Theory

The fantastic news that The Three-Body Problem won the Hugo Award,which is considered as the most well-known award for science fiction,has not only attracted keen attention from the whole world,but also offered concrete evidence for the fact that Chinese writer is also capable of creating a top-notch science fiction.Apart from its unbelievable success,this wonderful Chinese science fiction also aroused the public interest in the translator,Ken Liu.It is obvious that his translation,along with the general translation strategies and specific methods,deserves our earnest concern and should be further analyzed.Based on the theory proposed and developed by Hans Robert Jauss,Roman Ingarden and Wolfgang Iser,this thesis aims to figure out how Ken Liu copes with the relationship between faithfulness and betrayal during the translation process.First,the author outlines the necessity,significance,objectives and general frame of the thesis.Then she gives a brief introduction to the Reception Theory,including the theoretical origin,representative theorists and core concepts which later become the theoretical foundation for the case study.Meanwhile,background information of the source text,its writer and translator is also provided in detail.Finally,the thesis adopts the research approach of case study,where examples are classified and displayed to analyze the translation strategies,intending to probe into corresponding effects on Western readers' reception of the book.Despite its limitations,the thesis still carries theoretical and practical significance.Firstly,this thesis makes a deep study into the balance between faithfulness and betrayal in science fiction translation;and secondly,through the analysis and discussion of various translation methods adopted by Ken Liu,this thesis is intended to explore new directions and perspectives for future translation studies and practices of Chinese science fiction.
