Throughout the cultural history of all nations, religion could be found everywhere in human culture.American linguist Nida divided culture into five categories, and religious culture is one of them.Literary works boast a large number of religious cultural elements by quoting religious terms, biblical allusions and religious doctrines. Therefore, the translation studies on religious culture are of great significance in the cultural exchange between China and the West.Nowadays, many studies have been made on the translation of religious culture in literary works, which mainly focus on the translation of religious culture-loaded words, biblical allusions, and religious terms.More specifically, those studies concentrate on the selection of translation strategies and methods and the transfer of religious language. In the process of translating religious culture, due to the differences between source language and target language as well as some cognitive vacancy and gap in culture,it is of great importance to take the reader's response into consideration.By quoting many biblical allusions, religious terms, religious doctrines and original text from the Bible, the book The World Has Edges:Growing up Christian in Ohio has strong religious features and embodies religious thoughts. The translation problems and difficulties the translator encountered in translating this book focus on the translation of biblical allusions and religious terms. Therefore, taking The World Has Edges:Growing up Christian in Ohio as translation material, the translator categorizes translation problems of biblical allusions.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory, this report is written by analyzing the translation methods and techniques applied to solve the translation problems of biblical allusions based on human names, animals, plants, names of places and events respectively.By doing this, the translator is striving to find out the ways to reveal the religious cultural information in literary work and achieve similar reader's response,so as to help target readers to full comprehend the source text and achieve functional equivalence. And the translator hopes that this report can offer some beneficial references to translation practices and studies on biblical allusions.
