This paper mainly investigated Lin Baoheng,an adherent Ci poet of the Qing Dynasty, and his study of the ancient Chinese Ci-poetry,which consists of three parts:Part ?: Introduction. In this part, the author set forth the significance and status quo of the study and the methodology used in this paper.Based on his identity as a poet, the study of Lin Baoheng followed the development law of Ci-poetry styles and synthesized the characteristics of that era(social political and economic factors, and the overall atmosphere of the poetry circle in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China)and regional features,to make a systematic investigation into the ecology he faced and his mentality and style. The author also tried to unify the discussions of the person, history and Ci-poetry.Part ?: Chapter 1 to Chapter 6.In Chapter 1,a discussion was made on the family origin of Lin Baoheng, including his native place, ancestors, wife and other relatives. The investigation of family origin was aimed to clarify his family tradition of learning and show the influence of family factors on his study of Ci-poetry,so a section was devoted to a case study of three most influential family members Lin Fang,Lin Shaonian and Lin Baoxin. In the last section,an analysis was made on his formation of the adherent thought in combination with the living condition of his family and factors of the times.Chapter 2 is a study of his life,in which his name, alternative name and assumed name were analyzed,to distinguish him from his contemporaries of the same names. In the section of work analysis, the author gave an overview of each work that hecompiled or wrote, and made an analysis to find out main ideas. The section on his life gives a brief account of the important events he experienced and the development of his adherent thought. His social activities were discussed separately in Chapter 3,due to the rich content.Chapter 3 provides an investigation of Lin Baoheng's social activities related to the study of Ci-poetry.As an adherent poet,he had a close relationship with the poetry club of adherents, and the activities of the poetry club became a major channel for his social communication.Besides, the chapter discussed Ren'an Tian Ci Tu inscribed by many writers and the social communication between Lin Baoheng and poets from Fujian province in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China respectively,in order to show his social communication from multiple perspectives.Chapter 4 gives textual research and an interpretation of Lin Baoheng's creation based on Ren'an Ci and A Collection of the Four Famous Poets' Ci in the Song Dynasty. The analysis mainly involves the adherent works in Ren'an Ci,the artistic features of Ren'an Ci and its relation to the atmosphere of the poetry circle in the Republic of China and communities engaged in the study of Ci-poetry,as well as his learning from the famous writers of Song poetry like Zhang Yan.The section on“collections of Ci-poetry” gives a brief description of this special form of poetry research.Chapter 5 is the study of Min Ci Zheng.First,Lin Baoheng's identity as a bibliophile was taken into consideration to make a discussion of the relation between Lin Baoheng's collection of Ci and compilation of the two poetry anthologies Min Ci Zheng and Ci Zong Bu Yi.In the last two sections, the author adopted the methods of diachronic and synchronic research to make a comparative study of Min Ci Zheng and Min Ci Chao as well as the collections of Ci of other counties and towns during the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, making an attempt to summarize the compilation features, merits and demerits and the position of Min Ci Zheng among the collections of Ci of other counties and towns during the Republic of China.Chapter 6 is verification and analysis of Ci Zong Bu Yi and its relevant content, which mainly focuses on exploring its relation to the complete collection of Ci madein the previous dynasty and the similarities and differences in the selection of Ci,to reveal the advantages of Ci Zong Bu Yi in “the information of writers”,“recording of events”,“elaborate selection of works” and “inclusiveness”.Moreover,in terms of the works collected,an analysis was made on the thought of Lin Baoheng as an adherent, which was shown in Ci Zong Bu Yi.The last section refuted and corrected predecessors' improper evaluation of Ci Zong Bu Yi from the perspectives of versions and literature.Part ?: Conclusions. This paper is aimed to objectively and accurately evaluate Lin Baoheng's contributions to the poetry circle in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China and his position in the history of the ancient Chinese Ci-poetry.The standards for evaluation include the rewriting of Ci-poetry and the compilation of Ci anthologies. This part involves his achievement of Ren'an Ci,his role in promoting and developing the poetry style in his social activities, and the contributions of Min Ci Zheng and Ci Zong Bu Yi to the poetry circle and history of Ci-poetry in the Republic of China.
