Chih-tsing Hsia and Tsi-an Hsia are important scholars in the history of modern Chinese literature criticism.They were born in troubled times,and they lived through a long time separation.However,663 letters bridged the huge gap.In so many letters,the two brothers shared everything with each other,they recorded their emotional life,the exchange of learning,even talked about music and film,etc.These letters enable us to dig out the details of their life,and even to touch the rich historical texture of the society and era.Through these letters,we will build up the images of the two brothers which are full of flesh and blood.At the same time,these letters involved a lot of background information of their academic study,which can provide us with valuable information about their two masterpieces.This article is trying tocapture their academic and spiritual journey in the troubled times by doing some research on these letters,so as to present more tridimensionaland abundant images of the two.Further more,this article is also trying to reveal their cultural significance of the 20 th century.
