C.T. Hsia became famous in world academic circles for the book "History of Modern Chinese Fiction,", which is the first English literary work on Chinese modern fiction. Because of its unique and broad artistic vision, as well as academic background of Western literary theory, it has different evaluation criteria from the traditional literary history, which is why it attracted wide attention from domestic and foreign scholars. The author of this thesis tries to explain the academic value of Literary Criticism of C.T. Hsia by studying "History of Modern Chinese Fiction" carefully and deeply.In addition to the Introduction and Conclusion, there are three chapters. In the Introduction part, the author mainly states the reason she chooses the topic and the current research status.In the first two chapters, the author begins with two main literary criticism standards of Hsia and explores the association between them. Hsia often looks at the modern Chinese fiction from the Western theoretical point of view, he believes that literature should be "the transcendent writing for Holy Spirit". In the meanwhile, we should also pay attention to this standards in the process of literary criticism. The author elaborates his literature and criticism standards in detail from three aspects-- the religion, morality and humanity.Hsia emphasises "Write for the Holy Spirit", he also believes the thought “writing for humanitarian” made a considerable contribution to the history of literature development. It expose the real truth of life and promote the process of modernization of Chinese literature. At the same time, Hsia has a sense of "Obsession With China: The Moral Burden Of Modern Chinese Literature". He hopes the writers broaden their horizons, do not be limited to the narrow national vision, but integrate the hardship into the entire world to enhance the appeal of literary works. The second part of the study focuses on the meaning and significance of life of the thought of writing for life advocated by C.T. Hsia to experience the his complex feelings of Obsession With China: The Moral Burden Of Modern Chinese Literature ".Hsia has a distinctive academic qualities of literary. He also has new perspective to criticize the four writers---Zhang Ailing, Qian, Shen Congwen and Zhang Tianyi; His criticism to the literature writers is always categorical, and has a good master of the use of language; Hsia lived abroad for many years and knows the Western Literary Criticism theories well, so he stresses the comparative of Chinese and Western literature and emphasizes the intensive study on literary works. The third part discusses the distinctive academic qualities of Hsia from the points of research methods, critical vision and style criticism.The Conclusion has three sections. It summarized the inspiration of Hsia’s Literary Criticism concept.
