Positions And Methods-The Analysis Of Debate Between Pr(?)ek Jaroslav And C.T.Hsia In 1960s

The history of modern Chinese fiction written by C.T.Hsia has aroused controversies since its first publication in 60 s.From 1962 to 1963,there was a debate between the famous sinologist Pr??ek Jaroslav and Hsia in the academic journal T'ung Pao with the different points of view on Hsia's book.Although there were only two article in the academic debate,they indicated the two important literature view which are respectively represented by Pr??ek and Hsia.So far,the scholar has a stereotype about the debate that the antagonism between Pr??ek and Hsia is actually equally to the antagonism of two literature view,"reality comes first" and "aesthetic comes first".This kind of simple judgement would stop us to get a deeper understanding of the literature view of liberalism and left-wing.Since the book was writing by Hsia who had already get rid of the sponsor from U.S government,it was rude to say that the book was for anti-communist.For one hand,Hsia believed that the mission of his book was to find the beautiful work,meanwhile,it was important to know that the author wanted to build up a new tradition for modern Chinese literature.And this new tradition would be build up by the Chinese author who have been forgotten by the Chinese left-wing literature history,such as Ellien Zhang,Qian Zhongshu and so on.Because Hsia thought that the left-wing writers gave up the idea of exploring the complication of humanity and followed the simple realism.On the contrary,the description of reality is one of the most important character of modern Chinese literature.As long as getting an impressive study of the anxiety of the Chinese writers at that period,you would get the true meaning of all of their works.For another,even though Hsia has the academic training on new criticism,he hasn't used much of its critical method except perusal.Compare to Hsia,Pr??ek,from Prague School,emphasized the study of inner feature of literature.He outlined an organic connection with tradition Chinese literature and the modern one,in order to show the aesthetic literature view of modern Chinese literature.Finally,the divergence of ideology of Pr??ek and Hsia was shown up on their evaluation of Lu Xun.Hsia thought that Lu Xun was controlled by the policy which made his writing ability weaker than before.Conversely,Pr??ek believed that the firmer Lu Xun stand for communism,the better Lu Xun's writing become.Lu Xun was always standing for the proletariat and believing in Communism which was also the self-reflection of Pr??ek himself.So,when we analyze the debate or the literature view of Pr??ek and Hsia,we should say it with the specific questions and viewpoints.It is imprudent to classify them into a simple literature view.
