A Study On The Expression Technique Of Traditional Theme In Contemporary Subway Mural Design

The rapid advance of the subway has not only led to the diversification in the art design of the subway space but also draws wide attention to its artistic values.Therefore,the design of the subway space should not simply realize the functional purpose,but needs more to cater to the needs of the general public for cultural products so as to promote the cultural image of the city.Since the first subway mural appeared up to now,the designing of subway mural tends to be diversified in both the form and the materials involved.The wide application of subway murals that are based on traditional Chinese themes but are presented in original forms witnessed its influence on the public space of the subway,coloring it with great Chinese flavour.Therefore,a review of the expression techniques of the traditional Chinese themes in an attempt to summarize them,will contribute to the establishment of the unique styles and the artistic school in the creation of the subway murals in the years to come.The paper consists of two sections in dwelling on the subway murals.In the first section,it compares and analyzes the domestic as well as the overseas cases of the subway mural designing based on the concerned theories.It then investigates the subway murals that have been completed in cities such as Beijing,Shanghai,and Nanjing,etc,in order to summarize the application of the traditional themes and the expression techniques.The research focus is given to the themes,expression forms,and the expression techniques.The features of the subway murals signaled in each stage of the development are analyzed and summarized,together with analysis of the outline,coloring,and materials involved of the subway murals.The second section attempts to explore the new forms used in designing of the current subway murals and then,by analyzing the designing practice of my own,demystifies the interconnections between the space,materials,and application of traditional themes on the one hand,and the space and the materials on the other.
