Literary works not only embody the writer’s thoughts and personal background, but also stands for the ideas and culture of a nation and a nationality. Translation, especially literary translation, demands that the translator should have a sufficient understanding of the original work as well as ample artistic taste and creativity. The activity of translating literary works involves the blending and differentiation of two kinds of languages and cultures. Therefore, translators who want to consummate in translation should guide themselves with various translation theories and techniques, improve their understanding of the style and connotation of the original work and finally reach the translation level of dynamic equivalence.The present paper discusses several translation theories and techniques in literary translation. Through the translation of four excerpts of the novella wake, the author of the present paper realizes that translating a literary work is not an easy task. Actually it requires a comprehensive accumulation of language and cultural knowledge.
