Under the background of cultural globalization, translation of classic Chinese literary works has attracted much attention from scholars in the field of translation. However, compared with translation studies on fictions, researches on opera translation seem to have been marginalized.Meanwhile, large amounts of cultural elements in opera have brought great difficulties to opera translation. For the purpose of cultural communication through translation,it is important to conduct researches on translation of culture-loaded words in Chinese opera. This thesis takes Xu's translation of Dream in Peony Pavilion, the representative traditional Chinese opera,as the subject of study. From the perspective of interpretive theory, the author makes a detailed analysis on the translation of culture-loaded words in the opera, aiming to provide some useful methods for the translation practice. The major research method is text analysis.Three steps of translation in the triangle model of interpretive theory, namely comprehension,de-verbalization,and re-expression,are clarified in detail with a case study on translation of culture-loaded words in Xu's translation. It is concluded that interpretive theory focuses on sense conveyance and communicative function of translation, and Xu's version well reflects this theory in the translations of culture-loaded words.Target readers can understand cultural elements in the original text through translation so as to establish cultural communication. Moreover, several translation methods most frequently used in Xu's translation are concluded in this thesis, including literal translation, substitution, amplification and explanation, and omission and generalization.Literal translation is suitable for the translation of culture-loaded words that do not have too much implicate meanings, such as character's names and tune names;substitution is effective for the translation of typical metaphors and puns in Chinese culture,so as to realize sense equivalence or similar expressive effects;amplification and explanation works for the culture-loaded words that need complements of background knowledge or context information;omission and generalization is useful for the translation of those words with unimportant background information. On the basis of discussion above,it is hoped to provide some reference for the Chinese opera translation practice.
