| Race and Economics is written by Walter E.Williams,a professor of economics at George Mason University.Based on an economic analysis, the problems black Americans have faced in the past are discussed in the book, which reveals how excessive government regulation and the minimum-wage law have imposed incalculable harm on the most disadvantaged members of American society. The book creatively uses an economic approach to analyze racial issues in the United States. As such,it provides a new perspective for ordinary Chinese readers and even specialists to better understand American society and sheds light on studying similar issues in our society if there are any. This is why the translator decides to make it available to the Chinese public by rendering it into Chinese. The whole translation process is guided by the theory of explicitation and implicitation, which were first proposed by Vinay&Darbelnet.Explicitation in translation means that the translator deduces the hidden information in the source language according to the context and explains it in the target language. There are two forms of explicitation:amplification and specification.Implicitation means that the translator hides the explicit information in the source language according to the requirements of the context and the expectation of the target reader.Translation involves the translator’s compromise. There are great differences between English and Chinese in both grammatical and syntactic structures and cultural backgrounds. Therefore,in the process of bilingual conversion, translators should be able to flexibly use the explicitation strategy to supplement the cultural background, and at the same time adopt the implicitation strategy to balance the translation,so as to be as faithful to the original text as possible and convey the content of the original text. This translation report is divided into two parts. The first part consists of five chapters:an introduction to the project, the translation process, theoretical framework for the case study, the case studies and conclusion of the report;the second part is the appendix, including the source text, the translated text and acknowledgements. |
