Report On Liaison Interpreting For The Visit Of Australia Ageing Well Alliance Services To Yantai

This report is based on the liaison interpreting work done by the author for Australia Ageing Well Alliance Services’ business trip to Yantai.The author,through reviewing and analyzing the whole practice,explores how the interpreter can show his/her visibility and empowerment awareness through role change and turn control in liaison interpreting,so as to ensure smooth communicative activities.In this report,firstly,the author gives a task description.Then,it is about task process,including the pre-interpreting preparations and the details of interpreting process.Next,it’s the case analysis.The author discusses them in perspectives of interpreter’s visibility awareness and empowerment awareness,by analyzing corresponding cases.Finally,the author draws a conclusion of the task,including a summary of interpreting activity,inspiration and prospects for future study.Through task description and case analysis,the author draws these conclusions as follows: Firstly,the interpreter should have visibility awareness in practical work.What the interpreter does is no longer just to switch the linguistic codes as traditional rules,but to be an active intermediary mediating the whole process of communication.The interpreter can choose to be a gatekeeper to screen unwanted information or co-interlocutor to build up the conversation.Secondly,the interpreter,as a mediator,needs to have an empowerment awareness.The premise of empowerment is to ensure the balance of power distribution and the smoothness of dialogue,so that weak parties also have the opportunities or powers to speak or to know information.When one of the parties is in a weak position,the interpreter needs to make reasonable and accurate judgments on specific situations in a timely manner by accepting turns,interrupting or ignoring the turn,and offering a turn to him/her to express opinions,thus promote equal dialogue between the parties.
