A Report Of The Interpreter’s Visibility In Foreign Affairs Liaison Interpreting

As a result of the ongoing economic globalization,international exchanges and interpreting activities are growing.Liaison interpreters are coming into the spotlight.In addition,China and Ireland are good partners with significant potential for cooperation.It’s crucial to use the Irish Ambassador’s visit as a springboard to support regional businesses and encourage collaboration between China and European countries including Ireland.The author was employed as an interpreter by the Chongqing Foreign Affairs Office to accompany the new Irish ambassador,Ann Derwin,during her visit to the city this year.During a diplomatic reception hosted by the CPC Yuzhong District Committee,the author served as an interpreter and used the theory of interpreter’s visibility to foster communication between the Irish ambassador and the Secretary of the CPC Yuzhong District Committee and build a bridge of friendship.Over the history of interpreting,the early research and study focusing on conference interpreting traditionally believed that interpreters should be invisible language converters.However,with the turn of the sociology of translation,more and more scholars pay attention to other roles of interpreters as gatekeepers,cointerlocutors,and coordinators.Based on Ren Wen’s work The Liaison Interpreter’s Subjectivity Consciousness,this report on interpreting will analyze the specific application and examples of the interpreter’s visibility theory in foreign affairs,especially in receptions.Through the implementation of the interpreter’s visibility,the interpreter achieves the goal of translation,promotes collaboration and mutual understanding between the two sides,and better promotes the friendship between people from Chongqing and Ireland.
