A Report On The Translation Of Military Texts By Skopos Theory

It is crucial for China's national defense and military construction of understanding foreign military information and learning military advanced technology abroad.It is imperative to strengthen the translation of military English texts due to the increasing demand for translation of this type of texts.Therefore,sufficient attention should be paid to the study of translation of military texts.United States Department of Defense promulgated the latest version of Army Materiel Maintenance Policy in September 2013.This regulation covers general maintenance operations,commodity-oriented maintenance operations,maintenance management systems and so on.This report selects part content of the third chapter which mainly introduces the Army maintenance policy,structure and the Army maintenance system.Military English translation is of accuracy,preciseness and objectivity.It is necessary to make the target readers understand the military content and information contained in the original text to the utmost so as to achieve the communicative purpose.This is consistent with Skopos Theory which is the core of functionalist translation theory.This report analyzes the lexical and syntactic characteristics of military English texts from the perspective of Skopos Theory,and expounds the guiding significance of the theory on the translation of military texts.In this report,the translation task is briefly summarized first.Then,the content of the three principles of Skopos Theory and its significance for military English translation is elaborated in detail.Through specific cases,the translation strategies,such as amplification,omission,division,recombination and conversion,are used to analyze the translation practice from lexical and syntactic level.Finally,the author summarizes the translation practice.It has found the following three aspects: firstly,Skopos Theory has a strong guiding significance on the translation of military texts.Secondly,background knowledge and source language analysis are of great importance,which can improve translation efficiency.Thirdly,this practice can arouse interest of more scholars on the study of the translation of military texts,which contributes to translation studies in this field.
