Research On Translation Of Culture-Loaded Words In English And Ukrainian Editions Of Alai's Novel "Chen Ai Luo Ding"

Lev Tolstoy has said:"While translating,we should not render the words' meaning,we also shouldn't render the text's content,the most important thing is to render the impression".Throughout centuries,the most prominent people of our world,including writers,interpreters,literature professors and translation theorists were puzzled by the same question:"What kind of translation should be considered the perfect one?"In 1998 the Chinese writer of Tibetan origin Alai published his novel "Chen Ai Luo Ding".In 2000 this book was awarded with the most prestigious literature prize in China,Mao Dun literature prize,which has made Alai famous all over the world.In the novel,Alai has brilliantly depicted the peculiarities of Tibetan political and social systems,he has also masterfully portrayed natural beauty of Tibet and local people's traditions,customs and religious beliefs.There is no doubt that while reading this book a reader may find plenty of culture,loaded words,which are difficult for foreigners to understand.Translation of those words becomes the biggest challenge for the translator.This thesis provides a research on translation of culture-loaded words in English and Ukrainian editions of Alai's novel"Chen Ai Luo Ding".The research is based on Peter Newmark's classification of culture loaded words,which includes words of social,material,religious,ecological and linguistic cultures.The thorough analysis and summary of all culture-loaded words in Chinese,English and Ukrainian editions of the novel is provided in this research.Furthermore,based on Peter Newmark's translation theories(namely,divided into semantic translation theory,communicative translation theory and correlative approach),this research analyzes translation strategies applied by English and Ukrainian translators,while translating novel's culture-loaded words.Finally,author's ideas and suggestion about the further research are given in the end of the thesis.
