Functional Equivalence Theory In Translation Practice Of Cicadas Of The Next Morning And Stain

During the graduate period,the writer has translated Cicadas of the Next Morning and Stain written by Inoue Hisashi,a renowned Japanese novelist and playwright.This report aims to discuss the feelings and experiences of the writer in translating those short stories.Based on the Japanese war in the 20th century,the two novels describe a group of youngsters fighting against their fate in a sanatorium.The stories are said to be derived from Inoue Hisashi's childhood experiences,and thus praised as masterpieces of autobiographical novels.The difficulties in translating these two novels lie in the complicated story line and the precise narration of the characters' feelings.In the procedure,the writer was inspired by Nida's functional equivalent theory.Under the guidance of the functional equivalent theory,this report analyzes the reasons for misinterpretations and incomplete translations by looking from vocabularies,sentences and literary expressions.In this process,one can conclude that it is important for translators to accurately understand the information provided in the originals and pay attention to the consistency of the context.This report consists three chapters.The first one introduces the concept of functional equivalent theory and its application in translating Cicadas of the Next Morning and Stain.The second chapter compares the original translation of the two novels and a translation version from an experienced translator.The causes of misinterpretation and incomplete translation are tried to be found in terms of vocabularies,sentences and literary expressions.By analyzing the narration of the stories,the writer comes to realize that imperfect understanding of the originals is the reason all those mistakes exist,and that the consistency in translation is the key to make sure accuracy.In the third chapter,the writer of this report tries to translate Cicadas of the Next Morning and Stain based on the conclusions from the first two chapters and avoid aforementioned mistakes.In this process,consistency is achieved by realizing the consistency in language and the characters' personalities.Through the analysis,the writer reviewed the translation process of Cicadas of the Next Morning and Stain,and made a new review and summary of the translation results,and improved the translation ability.
