Research On The "Equivalent Effect" Of Subtitling Translation In Garfield Ⅱ With Functional Equivalence Theory

With the increase of international communication and cooperation, a large number of foreign films have flooded into the Chinese film market, which satisfies the needs of different circles of audience. Subtitling translation plays an important role in helping the audience understand and learning about some information and cultures from different countries. This paper mainly combines Nida's functional equivalence theory with Peter Newmark's "equivalent effect" as a theoretical foundation, and analyzes the features of two kitties (Garfield and PrinceⅫ)'source language (English) and target language (Chinese) from a new perspective based on their living surroundings and social status. With Nida's functional equivalence theory, the paper tries to cope with the study on film subtitling translation through three aspests—vocabulary equivalence, syntactic equivalence and stylistic equivalence. According to these three different angles, the author tends to test the equivalent effect on subtitling translation of the film with different translation methods and techniques.In Chapter 1, the paper mainly introduces the paper's motivation, significance, methodology, research questions and the major characters of the film GarfieldⅡ; In Chapter 2, through literature review the author generalizes the previous researches on translation by many scholars from home and aboard, and makes a detailed analysis on functional equivalence theory and equivalent effect; In Chapter 3, the paper makes a research on the features of two kitties'source language and target language; In Chapter 4, the paper primarily solves the translation problems on culture-oriented words from subtitling, and concludes the translation methods and techniques on these words based on the limitations and features of subtitling translation of the film; In Chapter 5 the paper applies Nida's theory into practice and makes a study on vocabulary equivalence, syntactic equivalence and stylistic equivalence. In fact, the purpose of these three equivalent sections is to achieve the cultural equivalence of subtitling translation.Through a series of summaries and analyses, the author draws some conclusions as follows:①As a social man, the features of the source language (SL) and the features of the target language (TL) of the characters in the film are determined by many factors, especially by their living surroundings and social status.②Culture-oriented words can adopt different methods and techniques to be translated, but one should keep close to the original which can help the TL audience better understand the cultures and contexts of the original;③Translation equivalence not only includes vocabulary equivalence, syntactic equivalence, and stylistic equivalence, but also cultural equivalence which helps the audience from the TL easily understand the original cultures.④The case studies provide useful reference for other scholars' researches.This thesis makes a series of researches and gets better answers to tackle some problems of subtitling translation on the basis of some tables, and helps other scholars with their researches in the near future.
