The early painting style of Chen Shuren was influenced by“Ju”s(JuChao and JuLian).The artistic view of “Nature outside,source inside” exerted influence on his paintings.According to his early painting subjects,he was not constrained by traditional copying,and he focused onobtainment and transformation derived from nature.In his early years,he followed two “Ju”s.He received the training of traditional Chinese paintings,so he had still usedtraditionalscattered perspective technique in the composition of a picture,and he inherited and developed the “Mogu” power-adding painting technique of “Ju”s.In his middle years,he had adhered to the concept that the development of aesthetic educationshould be a considerably important issue to solve before invigorating the nation.He hoped to save the nation through aesthetic education on the basis of learning from the western paintings while having a foothold on traditional Chinese painting.He finally found ways of learning from the western paintings by virtue of Maruyama-shijo.In his paintings,he attempted to combine the perspectives of focus with dark change of the light and shadow.However,in his exploration,his painting had always been based on tradition,which had laid a foundation forintegration of Chinese and Western styles in his later flower and bird paintings.In his later years,Chen Shuren's painting style changed a little: he tried a lot of “subtractions”based on his previous painting style.His paintings were characterized by integration of Chinese and Western styles and non-dualism,striking people as plain,simple and back to nature.His artistic conception was just a mirror of his state of mind;his peace of mind allowed his paintings to have naturalplainness.Beautiful objects in nature had become his typical subject matters in his later stage.In terms of compositional form,Chen Shurenflower and bird paintings in his later years had not only the sense of formof space division,but also spiritual meaning of grandness.This feature should be attributed his sublation of Chinese and western paintings and their integration.In terms of painting technique,he used line shaping instead of color modeling,manifesting return after the integration.In all his life,his painting styles had changed constantly.He represented the core spirit of being innovative in the new era of Lingnan School of Painting.
