This article is a project report on the translation of an excerpt from the original novel The Color of Hope(the ninth chapter to the eleventh chapter)by British writer Susan Madison.The main content is that Ruth's son William was suffering from leukemia.At this time,the drowning daughter Josie was still alive,so Ruth starts a redemption between hope and disappointment.The translator hopes to improve her level of translation through this translation practice and to understand the beauty of life through reading.The main difficulty of this translation is that there are a lot of dialogues in the original text.Therefore,how to deal with the dialogue naturally and faithfully is the problem that the translator needs to solve in the process of translation.Moreover,this novel has a lot of scenery description,which can highlight the characters and convey their psychological activities.So it requires the translator to have a good mastery of translation theory and translation skills and methods.Considering the dialogue and the description of scenery,the translator uses "Skopos Theory”as the theoretical guide,which includes three principles of translation,the Skopos rule,the Coherence rule and the Fidelity rule.Furthermore,combining with specific cases,the translator uses various translation skills and methods,such as:Amplification,Omission,Sentence Division and Recombination method.On the basis of a good expression of the meaning of the original text,the translated version needs to satisfy the Chinese expression habit.The purpose of this project is to enhance the translator's ability of translating of English and Chinese novels,and also hope to understand the value of kinship and cherish the family 's companionship through reading.Through this translation practice,the translator can draw the following conclusions:firstly,before translating,one must be well prepared;secondly,it is helpful to make notes in a timely manner during the process of translation;thirdly,the appropriate translation theory should be chosen according to different translation types and translation objectives;fourthly,perseverance is needed throughout the whole translation process.
